We all know the motives, features, and characters of horror movies, they are out there to scare us and make us feel creepy. Though, horror movies plots are quite simple and predictable, yet, they impress the audience with their special effects and tense atmosphere. People want to experience their inside fear and take horror movies as a challenge. Horror is a kind of an art, which plays with people’s emotions and this same art gets so disturbing, that they get banned from viewing.


These banned horror movies consisted of some very gory, bizarre, terrifying and controversial scenes. Most of them have never been released and some appeared after many years, with a lot of those disturbing scenes edited.

1. Cannibal Holocaust (1980)


One of the most infamous films, that got banned in over 50 countries, as it revolved around arson, rape, murder, violence, and cannibalism. Barely 10 days after the movies release the director Ruggero Deodorato was charged with several counts of murder, forcing him to admit the film was staged and not snuffed. During the filming,  many animals were killed, including a monkey and a big turtle.

2. The Last House on the Left (1972)


This was the master of horror movies, Wes Craven’s directorial debut, which was violent and disturbing, resulting in getting banned all over the world for years. There was a huge argument over this highly controversial film, that stormed for years, especially in the UK, as to what scenes should be deleted.

3. The Evil Dead (1981)


A very low budget film which went on to make a lot of bucks, though, it was a nightmare for the cast and crew. This movie was critically acclaimed but got banned in Germany, Iceland, Finland, Ukraine, Singapore, and many other countries and was one of the first films regarded as a video nasty in the UK.

4. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)


This movie was instantly banned in UK, Brazil, Australia, West Germany, Chile, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Singapore, and Sweden, due to its extremely violent content. But this movie is credited for being influential in giving birth to a number of genre tropes.

5. I Spit on Your Grave (1978)


This was not one of those horror movies, with zombies feeding on humans, but a rape and revenge drama, which contained a 30-minute gang rape scene. Considered as one of the worst movies ever made, that got banned in Ireland, 7 years in Australia and was available only in a few Canadian territories.

6. The Exorcist (1973)


A classic among horror movies and the biggest grossing film, which became a worldwide spectacular. This disturbing movie triggered many audiences to vomit, faint, and go berserk. In the UK this film’s video was banned for 20 years. There were rumors that if anyone saw this film alone would be offered a prize.

7. A Serbian Film (2010)


A very disturbing film, which got banned in France, Australia, Singapore, and Spain. Other places it got released with almost 20-minutes of its footage cut. The movie was withdrawn from three film festivals in Spain and one in Brazil, due to scenes of infant rape, decapitation, and death-by-choking (on a penis) during rape.

8. Possession


A cult film among horror movies shot in West Berlin and was based on a true story of a little girl possessed by a demon. This film received plenty of critical acclaims and Isabelle Adjani won the best actress at the Cannes Film Festival. This movie was heavily edited for US distribution and banned in the UK for years, until 1999.

9. Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom (1975)


This film consisted scenes of sexual torture, unfathomable cruelty, and sadism manifest in the darkest chapters of human history, with a woman shown eating human feces. The director Pier Paolo Pasolini’s was murdered before its release. This film was twice banned in Australia until 2010 and was never released in theatres.It was also banned in the UK, New Zealand, and several other countries. A shopkeeper was arrested for renting the movie in Ohio.

10. Faces of Death (1971)


A pseudo-documentary horror film that scared audiences for years, though it was banned in 46 countries. It contained scenes of a “bloody” dogfight, a brutal electric chair execution, American tourists gorging on the brains of a live monkey, a guy getting eaten by an alligator, the Satanic cult cannibal feast, the dumb camper who tries to feed a bear a sandwich and becomes the real lunch. Audiences were confused whether it is staged or real.

11. A Clockwork Orange (1971)


Not technically a horror film, yet it got banned by censors, which portrayed acts of anarchic, anti-social violence. Stanley Kubrick dissects the nature of violence in this darkly ironic, near-future satire with violence, bludgeoning, gang rape and sexually disturbing explicit scenes.

12. Land of the Dead (2005)


A disturbing zombie flick with plenty of cannibalism showing blood-soaked, starving people eating human flesh during the Ukraine 1933 famine, which didn’t go well with the Ukraine authorities and finally got banned. It had some stomach-turning special effects making the audience shiver.

13. The Human Centipede II (Full Sequence) (2011)


This was a black-and-white body horror film about a mentally disturbed loner that obsesses over the film The Human Centipede (First Sequence), kidnaps a group of people to create his own ‘human centipede’ to act out his perverse sexual fantasies. In the UK many of the scenes were cut by the censors and was banned in Australia.

14. Absurd (1981)


From the 39 horror movies banned in the UK in 1984, Absurd was one because of its disturbing gruesome scenes, showing a butcher having his head split down the center with a band saw. It also had some religious overtones of a priest chasing to kill a demon in human skin.

15. Visiting Hours (1982)


This disturbing movie shows a serial killer who hates women and he wants to kill this particular feminist. This was a routine slasher flick, thanks to Michael Ironside’s menacing performance as the killer and was inspired by John Carpenter’s Halloween.
